This painting depicts a moment from the 13th century Mali epic of Sundiata. Queen Sassouma Bérété who wanted her rival destroyed sent Mali’s most powerful sorcerers to do what she could not. They refused, and three owls circled above her rival Sogolon’s home as protection.
